Lighting The Way For A New Lanternshark Species

It’s a girl! It’s a boy! It’s a new shark species!

The ninja lanternshark (which was covered in an earlier post in October) now has a new relative. Marsha’s lanternshark (Etmopterus marshae) is from the Philippines area and sports splendid green eyes and a slim, dark body that allows it to blend into the inky surroundings in the deep sea. Pictures of this newest Etmopterus member show light bands on the tail (scientifically called the ‘caudal fin’) and their sides are reminiscent of a galaxy with their blue, black, purple coloration and sparkles that remind one of the stars. What made this lanternshark stand out? “The intricate pattern, the flank marking, and the rather beautiful appearance of the shark in the fresh pic.” says Dr. David Ebert, who is also known as ‘The Lost Shark Guy’ (see his Facebook page here).
