Environment minister Pohamba Shifeta says he will conduct a hearing in the next two weeks to hear counter objections against the issuing of an environmental clearance certificate for phosphate mining.
Namibia Marine Phosphate wants to mine phosphate used to make fertilisers from Namibia’s seafloor, about 120 kilometres south-west of Walvis Bay for over 20 years.
The High Court last week found that Shifeta had failed to give a fair hearing to Namibian Marine Phosphate before he decided in November 2016 to cancel the environmental clearance certificate issued to the company.
Shifeta told The Namibian yesterday that he will chair a hearing on 28 May to decide whether to withdraw the clearance certificate as he previously did, or to allow phosphate mining to continue as approved.
