Conservationists campaigning for a ban on deep sea bottom trawling have been given an unexpected boost by the discovery that a parliamentary vote was miscounted.
On December 10 a proposal to ban bottom trawling below depths of 600m was defeated in the European Parliament by 342 votes to 326. Campaigners spoke ruefully of how close they had been to success.
However, it has now been revealed that 20 MEPs have complained that their votes were miscast or misrecorded and that the true count should have been 343 to 330 in favour of the ban.
Two of the 20 miscounted MEPs said their votes should have been registered as a ‘no’ but the other 18 said their votes should have been recorded in favour of the ban.
