Matthew Gianni

Co-founder, Political and Policy Advisor Deep Sea Conservation Coalition

Matthew Gianni is an independent consultant, advisor and advocate for marine conservation based in the Netherlands. He is a co-founder of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition and currently serves as its Political and Policy Advisor. He has been involved in international fisheries and marine conservation policy, law and treaty negotiations for almost 30 years at the United Nations General Assembly, UN summits, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, regional fisheries management organizations and the International Seabed Authority.

Mr. Gianni has authored or co-authored a number of papers and reports on fisheries, marine biodiversity, seabed mining and oceans governance for science and policy journals, the UN FAO, IUCN, governments and NGOs. He has also made numerous presentations on deep-sea conservation issues to a variety of political fora and scientific conferences including the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, regional fisheries management organizations, the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament and Deep Sea Biology Symposia. He was formerly Oceans Campaign Coordinator for Greenpeace International and a partner in the EU funded MIDAS Project. He is currently a partner in the EU funded Atlas Project and is an advisor to the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative and Global Oceans Forum.
