George Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (GIBS)

GIBS was founded as a non-profit organization in 2000 by conservation biologist and marine ecologist Prof. Robert Y. George.  Dr. George has taught hundreds of students at baccalaureate, Master’s and Ph. D. levels at American Universities around the United States. GIBS is affiliated with European institutions like the Kristineberg Marine Research Station, operated by the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences that awards the Nobel Prizes.

GIBS is dedicated to the conservation of nature, focusing on selected marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, deep-sea, pelagic ecosystems, seamounts and deep-sea coral habitats. GIBS is working, inter alia, to facilitate the establishment of Marine Protected Areas and to conduct original research on deep-sea coral reefs, with several expeditions planned for 2005 and 2006.
